It has for some time now been uncertain whether the World Junior Championship in ice
hockey would be played or not this winter due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. But now
the International Ice Hockey Federation has confirmed that the tournament will go ahead.
IIHF 2021 will be played between December 26, 2020 and January 5, 2021.
The tournament, which was originally supposed to be divided between the two Canadian cities of
Edmonton and Red Deer, has been given a new arrangement. WJC will only be played in
Edmonton and the matches will be played in front of empty stands.
All nations will undergo strict rules both before the WJC and during the championship itself and all
teams will be completely isolated during the tournament due to the Covid-19 pandemic that is
happening all over the world.
The IIHF also announced that WJC 2022, which would have been played in Gothenburg, has
been postponed to 2024. WJC 2022 will instead take place in Edmonton and Red Deer, who
were the planned organizers for the upcoming tournament.
